While Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice isn’t an RPG like its Dark Souls predecessors, it does have some heavy RPG elements within it. This includes a sort of leveling up system where you earn XP and eventually Skill Points that can be spent to improve your character. While the game breaks down some of these systems, it’s left to the player to figure out the finer details, and if you aren’t reading the large chunks of text thrown at you then the larger details as well. To help, here’s how to earn and spend skill points in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
How to Earn and Spend Skill Points
First off, what are skill points and how do they work? Skill Points are simply the accumulated XP you’ve earned through your time playing Sekiro. You earn XP by killing enemies and bosses. The more you kill, the more you earn. You can see how much you have at any time by going into the menu and looking at the blue bar on the bottom right. The large number is how many actual Skill Points you have, while the bar represents your progress to the next one. Earn more XP and get to the next level to gain another point you can use to improve Sekiro.
Something to keep in mind with this. Once you earn a Skill Point it is yours. However, death can take away half of your progress to the next one. Unseen Aide will prevent this, but only 30% of the time at its most effective. The more Dragonrot has spread through the world, the less likely it is to trigger, meaning the higher the chance you lose half the XP you earned toward the next Skill Point. If you’re close, or just want to farm some XP, just find a group of enemies near a Sculptor’s Idol, take them out, Rest, then do it all over again.
OK, so that’s how to earn Skill Points and what they are, but how do you spend them? To do this you just need to stop by any of the multiple Sculptor’s Idol statues scattered around the game. Sitting down at one will offer a bunch of choices for what to do, including Acquire Skills, which is where you can spend your Skill Points in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
Choose this and you’ll enter the Skill menu. At first there is only one set of skills to choose from here, but as you play through the game you will unlock more menus to choose from. These include passive abilities like taking less posture damage from certain attacks. It also includes specific buffs to items, like more uses from your Healing Gourd.
And that’s all there is to know about how to earn and spend skill points in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Be sure to check out all of our other Sekiro guides for help with those ultra tough boss battles, or anything else troubling you in the game.
